Hi There All,

My query is this

We have a test server which is ghost of our Live server, on this server we have turned sendmail off so all email jobs don't run and send email out to customers from our test server, Is there a way of sending an email via sendmail without turning the daemon on for just one email address?

Thanks

Hi,

sendmail does not need to be running if you want to send mails from your host to others@some_address.com
It is needed for receiving mails only.

In your /etc/sendmail.cf, put your SMTP gateway or its dotted IP( named here Your_smtp_gateway )

#DSmailer:relayhostname
DSyour_smtp_gateway

I am not too 100% about your answer aau mate. if sendmail isn't running .i.e stopsrc -s sendmail has been ran, then mail from the server will not be able to be sent out. Anyway I have tried your answer but the mail didn't leave the server.

Thanks

My sendmail is stopped on all AIX hosts. (security requirement)
But it can still sendmail mail out if the DS setting is set (as aau pointed out)
My /etc/mail/sendmail.cf has:
#DSmailer:relayhostname
DSxxx
where xxx is the smtp server defined in /etc/hosts
On some hosts sendmail is running but not accepting connections running /usr/sbin/sendmail -q30m in the foreground.

But that would mean that jobs could send mail to your customers as well.

If the jobs use the mail command, could you not perhaps changing the permissions of /usr/bin/mail ?
Or maybe moving /usr/bin/mail to /usr/bin/xmail
But beware of this when installing maintenance levels etc.

Another option may be to get another mailing utility. (I've seen a nice one written in Python)

"If you always do what you've always done, you will always be where you've always been."

Thats is what I am getting rzs0502, if I put the DS entry in then all mail with be send out to the customers which is not what I want. I don't want to install another mail software as this server gets rebuild at least 4 times a month.

Quick and dirty:

Send the mail messages by rsh-ing to a host which is not blocked from sending mail?

You can even set up a ksh alias mail='rsh somehost mail' to get email messages through. But your emails will originate from that 'somehost'
