sendmail problems after aix4.3.3 upgrade

Hi all,

I am having a problem with sendmail's alias file since upgrading to aix 4.3.3. Now when you send email to an alias name, that users will receive a random number of copies of that email. When you send mail using that same person's login name, everything is OK. One thing I did notice is that when I run the 'newaliases' command I get a few warning messages...

# newaliases

Warning: .cf file is out of date: sendmail AIX4.3/8.9.3 supports version 8, .cf file is version 7

/etc/aliases: There are 34 aliases. The longest is 37 bytes, with 463 bytes total.

Have you tried stopping and restarting sendmail to compile the new .cf file? Or is there a specific sendmail option to recompile a .cf? Errrmmm - have a look at the man page

I have stopped and started sendmail. I have not recompiled the .cf file as this is not supported by aix...and yes i read the man pages.

Also, I was told that using a V7 .cf file would not cause any problems, but today i changed over to the V8 .cf that came with aix 4.3.3 and I still have the same problem.

I had same kinda problems with sendmail. I remade the cf-file with m4 macroprosessor and got things going as I wanted.

Ok, how do I remake the cf file using m4???

I found the cure by editing the /etc/sendmail.cf file, look for something like this:

# level 6 config file format
V6/Berkeley

I simply changed it this:

# level 8 config file format
V8/Berkeley

Afterwards newaliases were pretty happy and stopped complaining...no problems yet.
