Sendmail not sending local mail

I am very new to sendmail and linux...so please bear with me...but I have RedHat 8 running with sendmail 8.12.5...I can send mail from any email client software (mail.app, outlook), but if I try to send mail from the server using: "[billy@billyk billy]$ mail kaufmanb@msnotes.wustl.edu
Subject: watch...this won't work
Did it work...NO!

Cc:
[billy@billyk billy]$ /home/billy/dead.letter... Saved message in /home/billy/dead.letter"
And when I try to send through squirrelmail it acts like it send...but alas...nothing comes to my mailbox. I have been skrewin around with this for a long time and really need some help. Anyone out there who could help would be my friend for life and i can donate some old mac 7100 is you like....thanks

check if your sendmail MTA its running!..
u can check simply making a telnet localhost 25

[root@billyk root]# telnet billyk.com 25

Does that look right?

try using mail -v
and check the debug result.

That just listed my mail....I am clueless...there are some unix guys downstairs from me who I think I'm going to ask....but they can be a bit....rude at times....anymore ideas...im always listenin'
