Hi there,

I am using sendmail on FC2.

It works perfectly but now my company needs are increasing and I need to add many more email addresses.

Normally I would create new users and add entries to the /etc/mail/virtusertable file.

Is there a way to add new email addresses and related mailboxes without having to create system users?

Thank you

Just about everything out there that makes life a little easier also makes you pay through the nose. However, no matter what you end up with, you are going to have to create user accounts. I'm going to guess that you don't mind creating accounts, you just don't want all those user home directories. If this is the case, you can create mail-only users. This is done the same way you do now but their shell will be /sbin/nologin and their home directory would be /dev/null. You could also create a common group for them such as mail-only or mail-user or something. The only thing they would have is a username/password combo. Now if I guessed wrong and you want an admin from each domain to create their own users, then you may want to check into webmin. Webmin lets you administer your server from the web using your browser. Webmin also has a module called usermin that lets you create admins which have access to you server. They only have access however to the modules you assign to them. You can check it out at

Thanks for the reply.

I will try adding users wiht the /sbin/nologin shell.

Concerning webmin, I have seen it on some other server; it looks pretty impressive but I rather stick to my command prompt if I can.

Anyway for the moment I do not want users to be able to administer any domain; perhaps I will look into it at a later stage.

Thanks a lot
