Sendmail incoming mail performace

Does anybody Know how can I improve incoming messages in sendmail. My sendmail is configured as a relay mail server, and needs to open and close smtp conections very quickly, since there is a sequential process which sends e-mail. The process owner say that in Lotus Notes in a Windows NT server, it accepts about 4 e-mails per second. In my Sendmail ( E440R - 4Gb Mem 3 Processors - Solaris 8) it can reach about 1.5 e-mail per second.Any ideas?
