server was running slow and wasnt receving mail I knew had been sent to me. I checked "TOP" and could see that sendmail was using 50% CPU and had been running for 50 minutes.

How do I tell what sendmail was doing? Was it receiving a very large file or had it just hung?

In the end I got the server rebooted. ALl fine now but no messages appeared.

Cheers.

You should check your mailq and persistent hosts, purge
(man sendmail)your queue and then finally send the mailproc a sighup if nothing else works. I have had problems like
this with queue errors and misbehaving remote MTAs.
What version of sendmail?
