sendmail doesn't send mail to other domains

I have sendmail working onlyfor the local domain and sends mails to only local domains but if I try sending mail to say for ex: yahoo.com it doesn't send. Is there anything I need to change in the configuration file od sendmail.cf?
Please advice as this is very critical for me to proceed with my project where I use PHP to send email (which uses sendmail as MTA)

Is DNS set up on the sendmail box or can you at least query another well known DNS server (see resolv.conf) ?
Is your access file set up (mydomain RELAY)
Is the domain you want to relay mail for in your relay_domains file ?
Start here ..... post error logs if you have the above set up proerly.
