Hello,

I've set up sendmail to run on a AIX server to relay to a windows 2000 server. The relay was working before from this server using a different relay server ip address.

However, now it is setup to use a new relay server and it is unable to establish a smtp connection with the relay server.

I get the message:

Deferred: A remote host did not respond within the
timeout period. with [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]

Can anyone tell me if I need to talk with the ISP or is this something that I can try and change on my end.

I have another server that uses the same mail relay server and it works without any issues.

Thanks in advance

-Rakesh

Hi Rakesh,

Try and telnet directly from the w2k machine to the relay and see what happens:

telnet mailrelay 25

If that does not work, try pinging it to make sure it really is reachable. It just sounds like a network connectivity problem from what you have said.

Scotty.

Thanks Scotty.

Actually, I can telnet to the W2K from the AIX server, so I don't think that is the problem.

However, how can I be sure that it is not a port problem?

-Rakesh

Scotty,

It appears you are correct. I can ping the mail relay, however, I can not telnet into it. I believe it might be port related.

Is there a setting that I can take a look at on the AIX server?

-Rakesh

On the AIX box do a "telnet localhost 25" and see if you get a response. If not the the problem is local, else possibly a routing/firewall port issue.
