sendmail connection timeout

Hi all. From some days I have a problem on my public mail server. It is running Centos 5.3 and sendmail 8.13.8. When I contact sendmail on port 25 to send an email it is very slow to answer and sometimes the connection timed out. If I make a telnet on port 25, the connection is open instantly but I need to wait for a lot of senconds (15-20) to see the line regarding hostname and sendmail service. I test it also directly on the server with the network ip address "telnet 192.168.1.10 25" and it is slow, if I make a telnet like "telnet 127.0.0.1 25" instead it is instant.
I also test mx resolution and it is instant.

Hello Norm, I try to add it to the sendmail configuration but without results.
I have also a new virtual server with Centos 5.5 and the same version of sendmail. There is the same situation. If I telnet the server on port 25 with address 192.168.30.10 it is slow (5-10 sec), with address 127.0.0.1 it is instant.
What can cause this problem?

Did you run it through the m4 process after making the change ? If not
Backup sendmail.cf and sendmail.mc before making any changes
Always make changes to sendmail.mc
type m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
then run /sbin/service sendmail restart

If you have done that I would guess it might be a DNS issue somewhere

Yes, I'm using Webmin. I made the test in M4 configuration file, rebuild sendmail configuration and restart the service.
I also check dns resolution and all seems ok. I'm testing it with local addresses directly on the server, do you think might be a dns problem? What other test can I try?

might try commenting out the ipv6 line unless your network requires it

does your /etc/hosts file have the ip address / name of your server

does your /mail/access list have the local network listed (also have to compile into access.db)

look in /var/log messages , maillog , secure for clues

Great! Now is working!
I add the local ip in /etc/hosts, I also set it at primary in the Resolution Order.
I'm able to send email at domain that before give me errors.
But it is still slow sending from Outlook. What can I do now?
