Sendmail and SSL server problem

I have a linux sendmail server that sends out all emails from my website front ends. They all go out fine except if it is sent from the server running SSL. I have tested this in a lab environment and can email fine if SSL is not installed and then when I install mod_ssl for apache, I get the following error when I try and send an email:

did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN during connection to MTA


Any input would be greatly appreciated:
