Recently, I have started experiencing a problem with sendmail sending e-mail to my Exchange 2000 server. Both of the servers are on my Intranet and I am able to telnet to port 25 on both servers, by name without any problem.
I am using sendmail to send logfiles, etc. to my e-mail account each evening so I have a single place to check log files.
Sending of smaller files using sendmail xxx@yyy.org < /etc/hosts works fine. However, when larger files are sent (over about 4K), I encounter problems. The error message I am receiving, when running mailq, says, "reply: read error from aa.bb.cc.dd" /var/log/maillog says, "Operation timed out with aa.bb.cc.dd."
Tracerts from one server to another show the correct routes.
The sendmail server is connected to the corporate network via VPN over DSL. The DSL MTU is 1492 and the VPN MTU is 1456.
Any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated. And, if any additional information would be helpful, please let me know.
Thanks,
Jay
