Sendmail 550 Host unknown

This is the first time that i have ever run into this. I can sendmail to my nuxbox running sendmail from the outside and i can sendmail locally.. but if i try to send mail to the outside world it all gets bounced back with either 550 host unknown. Sendmail is lisening on port 25. my resolve.conf file is working properly because i can ping and it will resolve the ip... can someone help me and explain what is going on!!!
