sending smtp mail

Hi All

When i send smtp email in this format joe.bloggs@bloggs.com the mail will send out but when anyone trys to reply or sends an external mail to the address it reports been undeliverable.

if we send to jbloggs@blogs.com it works find can any one explain why this happens if use a dot to seperate the names.
