Sending SMS via mobile phone

I am currently writing a VB6 app to send SMS, I have done this successfully using a Nokia datacard but am having problems with a Nokia 7110. I can manually send the AT commands using hyperterminal or an emulator link Anita or reflections but not AT comms thru VB. I think, therefore that the problem lies in the MSCOMM port settings, have tried handshaking Xoff/Xon RTS, etc. Anyone got any ideas??
Fast becoming dribbling wreck.
