sending mail hangs at ctrl-D

All of a sudden, sending mail from one of our Solaris boxes hangs after hitting ^D. No config files have changed. The public mail server on another system is accessible and from the system that hangs, I can login to SMTP on the public mail server. Anyone have any idea what to check, stop, start, kill, beat?
