sending mail from php on os x

i have php running on mac os x and i have am having a problem sending mail from the server. I have the built in apple mail server turned off and i have eims installed. i want to tell php to use eims to send mail out. I have read that you do this by setting it up in php.ini, but that it only works on windows. how do you do it on os x?

i also just installed phpmailer, it does work great- however my ideal solution would still allow me to use the mail() function since most apps i need to support will now need to be modified.
