Sending html email to Hotmail

Hi,

I'd like to send promotional email to my clients. Already, I've created a message in Dreamweaver which I succeeded in integrating into my email message and sent it to myself (Outlook 2002) and my hotmail account. It shows up well in Outlook but in Hotmail it's simply text.

What do I need to do to insure that all recipients, regardless of their email software, receive my email displayed as a web page?

Hi there!
I haven't used Hotmail in ages, but this is likely a user setting in Hotmail. I know for sure that there is an option in Yahoo! mail to suppress HTML expressly for the purpose of preventing advertisers/spammers from knowing when an email has been opened. Not sure how you can over ride this, and I'm not too sure that the Hotmail folks would be fond of you if you figure out how. Sorry...

The problem with that Gerr, is as Tom says, it's all about how the end user receives their emails. If they receive in plain text rather than HTML (as I do, for security reasons) then they'll see the HTML code. They could, however, copy/paste into a notepad file and save with the htm extension, then view it as it was intended, but that sounds like a PITA for that person.

My question is, why does it have to be HTML? If it's just because that's how it is currently being generated, is there another way? I don't know how you are creating this or what processes/methods are being employed, so I can't really say.

As it is, I already receive numerous html emails to my hotmail account which have the look of a web page. The problem is that when I try to send myself an email comprised of html just like a web page it comes up only as text while in Outlook it comes up perfectly.

Which begs the question, how exactly are you creating this message and sending it? (Unless I missed you posting it..)

And if it's via VBA or other code, it should be posted in the immediately relevant forum. This doesn't necessarily sound like an Office issue off-hand though.

I would like to point out (as have others) that being able to override settings is considered not a good thing.

You state it comes out perfectly in Outlook. That is only because you have Outlook set for allowing HTML in messages. In our organization we do NOT allow any HTML in any incoming email messages. Any HTML is stripped right out, or failing that, the email message will be rejected by the firewall and mail server, and will not get to the intended recipient.

So I must say that I hope you don't succeed in insuring

that all recipients, regardless of their email software, receive my email displayed as a web page

Frankly, I think my email software should have the final say....not whoever sends me mail.

One thing you may want to consider, is writing the data to a text file and sending it that way. You can always open a text file as "text.htm" with the Open method and the file shall keep it's extension. This could then be an attachment. A slight PITA, but maybe a plausible workaround..

You're probably right. I'm not addressing my problem to the proper forum. Frankly I don't know where the problem lies.

You must all understand that I'm not trying to circumvent any security measures that some may have put in place. When I test sending my html email to my hotmail account it is to test whether a willing recipient would receive the email in all it's html "splendor".

I used Macromedia Dreamweaver to create the html email. Maybe I should address my problem to that forum. It's just that it's in the Outlook forum that I managed to solve part of the problem. That is that when attaching my html file I needed to click on the down arrow of the insert button and choose the option to insert as text to properly include the code from my email.

I don't think this is something which you can control. Email editors reading HTML or Plain Text is a setting which is specific to each user and there's no real way for you to check who is setup to receive what unless you actually ask them. Depending on your situation, I doubt this would even start to help you.

As for any *real* problem, there doesn't really sound to be one. It's coming down to how each user reads their email.
