Hello,

Im new to Domino Administration. I was wondering if anybody here can help configure Domino so that our user can send email to the Internet using our Domino mail server. Does anyone know where I could find a step-by-step document that will help me configure it.

Thank you very much

First things first, Get the SMTP MTA software. The most recent version can be found at lotus.com. Domino does include the license and your CD may even have software on it. Obtain an IP address and Domain name, which you may already have. You should have a mail.box database, and your Domino server has to be running on either NT or OS/2. If you've had SMTP installed before, then make a copy of your mtatbls.nsf file. If you've never had SMTP installed before then you can ignore future references to this file.

Got all that? Ready?

Down your server, and exit Notes Wprkspace.
Begin the software install.
Do the typical install.
OK through the mtatbls file screen.

That's the hard part for installation, now you have to configure 4 documents: Global Domain, Foreign Domain, Server and SMTP connection.

Global Domain:
Open the Public N&A and select Domain view.
Select Add Domain.
Set teh type to Global.
set Global Domain name to Internet.
set role to SMTP MTA
set Outbound restriction to unrestricted. (less headaches later).
set domain suffix to your domain name.
set address lookup to enable or disable, your choice.
set local part to common or if you want to limit the name to 8 characters set short.
including domains is beft left to none.
change the domain seperator to a "." no quotes.

Foreign Domain:
Create just like the Global.
Set first field to: Foriegn SMTP Domain.
Add "*.*" {no quotes} to the Internet Domain field.
set the Domain name as Internet {Just like the Global}

Serve Document:
Modify your current server document in the Internet Message Transfer Agent fields.
Set Global Domain name as Internet.
set Internet host to the FQDN

SMTP Connection Doc: (this is best done from the server that is also hosting the SMTP)
OPen the Public N&A and select Add Connection.
Check that the source server is the same server that the SMTP MTA is installed. If not, change it.
Set Source Domain to the Domain name.
Set Destination server to SMTP.
Set Destination Domain to internet (the GLobal Domain name).

Wha-La!

Now you have two options for starting the agent. the best is automatically so while the server is still down:
open your Notes.ini
search for "Servertasks=" again no quotes
add SMTP to the end of the line.
Save notes.ini

You can do a manual start with the server command L SMTPMTA

Anyway, Hope that helps.
