Sending a hyperlink to network document via email

When I send an email with an attached link to a document stored on our network from a Windows XP machine (MS office XP SP2)to another user in the network, the link cannot be opened by the receiver. It appears in the email, but is not underlined and has <> on either end. HOwever, when I log on a another user to this same machine, I can send links. Is there a setting in OL or Word I need to change. Obviously, there is something stored in the user profile preventing me from sending a hyperlink (we use roaming profiles).
