Hi Guys, does anyone know the format for sending messages to another PC usng RUN (on the Start menu). I cannot for the life of me remember the command which is embarassing because I do remember it is a very simple command.

Thanx

Hi Guys, sorry it took me so long to get back to you but things got crazy for a minute.

When I used the commands suggest all I got was a minimized DOS window. The msg I typed in the run command was never delivered. I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong, not sure what.

Thanx, for responding,
Trudye

The cmd /k suggested by bcastner should cause the command window to remain open after the net send command runs. If you are having problems with that, open a command prompt by clicking Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->Command Prompt.

In the command window, type:

net send [user_name or computer_name] message

and press enter.

You should either receive an error message or "The message was successfully sent to [name].

Thanks so much Guys that worked great on some PC's but not on others. Do you have any idea why?

How does it not work? Do you receive an error message in response to the 'net send' command?

For it to work all PCs need to have the Messenger service running.

Start button, Run, services.msc

Check the status of the Messenger service.
You might want to Start the service.
You want to set its startup desposition to Automatic

Make sure your firewall blocks TCP and UDP on ports 135-139, and 445 from the outside coming in.
