Self Study MCSE?

I just finished taking an A+ course at a local school. I was disappointed because I did not feel that I got enough hands on experience during the class. All but 3 of the 17 classes were spent lecturing straight out of the book. I have no problem studying at home and felt the classes were boring. I now wish to work at getting an MCSE. Would it be that difficult for someone with no experience (except A+ cert.) to study the books (w/o spending all that money on the test prep courses) and pass the tests? Instead of the expensive courses, I could build a small network at home and save money. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

I'd have to say that it is possible, but difficult. As you mentioned, hands-on is critical. If you have the equipment and facilities to build a small network that you can use it would be much easier. I doubt seriously, though, that you could pass the exams without any hands-on. This was possible under NT 4, but unlikely with 2000.

For some folks the hardest part is the discipline of studying and practice regularly. It would also help a great deal if you have a friend or colleague who could mentor you and act as a resource.

Good luck! :)

I tried self study. It lacks something. But if you have the discipline try. Forget about "just" tryn to pass the exams.

What you have to remember is even with the certification, you only are half-way competent. NT in real life is most often nothing like it is in the book. I took 7 six-week hands-on courses. My teachers were guys who were actually working using NT in the field. They explained things the Microsoft way, and what really happens when you hook everything together in real life. That makes a big difference. Even if you set up on you network, it still wont be quite real world.

Sure you can do it. I earned my NT4 and 2000 MCSE through self study. HOWEVER, as one of the other replys noted, that is on half of the deal, actually less than half. To be of any value to an organization you MUST have hands on. The certification will get your foot in the door but you must perform. Best of luck to you.
