Selective Client Configuration Update possible?

Does anyone know of a way to selectively update clients? We would like to base this on groups if possible. i.e a user logs in and depending on which group they are in, they get a customised client update.

As far as I know this cannot be done - I recently sat an XP course and looked into my old notes - and even on XP you cannot 'push' out to clients per group.
The only option is to deliver per OS - ie: W32 / DOS / Mac / Unix etc etc.
Shame really becuase it would be a useful idea.
