I'm using 5.5. I'm a novice with this program. I seem to remember once while stumbling thru some procedures I was able to automatically select a basic imagine (without having to use lassos, or pens). I am an artist and need to perform one basic function: That is to select a piece of pottery from the photo and move it to a new background. It has to be a crisp selection (no feathering or blur)

Thank you for any help

Hi,

Is the image on a background already? If it is then you will have to use a combination of selection tools to cut the part of the image out that you want. If the image has already been cut out and it is on it's own layer then you simply use the arrow tool to move it around and then create a new background under neath it.

Hope this helps!

you may be looking for the magic wand tool - i think it's in version 5.5

click the magic wand tool on the tool bar to work with it. now clicking anywhere in your image will select an area of a similar colour. you can change the tolerance value up or down. the lower it is the more fussy photoshop is about which colours it selects.

if your pot is mostly the same colour try clicking on it with the magic wand tool. remember you can hold down ctrl or shift to add or subtract from a selection. or maybe the background is more one colour, in which case you could select the background and then go selection > inverse selection to select the pot.

usually to make a good selection you need to use a few of the selection tools in tandem (like magic wand and lasso). again, using ctrl and shift while using the selection tools will make this easy.
