selecting the desired colour in a gradient

Im currently working with various gradients in a drawing.
I want to add a gradient layer on top top of an already existing layer, and I want this gradient to consist of a darker colour+ the same colour used in the layer underneath, or as an alternative I want to use transparency. The problem occurs when I try to simply select the colour in the layer below using the eyedropper tool. This action simply turns off the gradient function instead of displaying the right colour for me to drag and drop into the gradient. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong, and does anybody know how how to create a gradient that goes from one colour to transparency?

Start with the gradient window open (the grade visible, with the little "house-shaped" sliders below)

Click on one of the sliders, then use the eyedropper to suck up a color (or click in a swatch square you've pre-loaded with the base color). Repeat with other colors. (I don't have it open at the moment, but I think you can also double-click to get a color picker.)

Option-drag the sliders to duplicate a color for use in other parts of the gradient (for example, a middle to both ends blend). You can drag the sliders over each other to change directions, etc.

if you want the color for use anytime, select the object with the gradient, click on the gradient preview thumbnail (the fill box in the gradient pallette), then click on the flag of the color you want. The color should appear in the fill portion of your fill/stroke dialogue. Click and drag that color into your swatches where it will be anytime you wanna drag it into one of your gradients.
