Have a little photo effets to be done.

But have problems with making frayed hair selections to give out a realistic effect. I tried quick mask but its kinda too tedious to go down to 1 pixel brush painting to make the selection.

Any ideas anyone?

Without buying third party plug-ins, there are a few options open to you.

First, try out the 'Extract' feature. This lets you define a rough outline of the image and it then figures out how to cut it out. Saves a lot of time and it works with soft edges too. Copy the layer you want to try it out on first.

Another option, have a look at individual channels to see if any of them give a reasonably clear outline. Copy that channel, play around with the levels to get a better sillouette (you may need to paint/erase some areas manually), then load that as a selection.
