selecting from a sub-select statement

I had a question similar to wcj's question. However I get a syntax error everytime I try and do another select statement after the from.

It would be easier, if you included the exact error message and your RDBMS.
Maybe your RDBMS doesn't support Derived Tables or you forgot the table alias:
select ..
from (select ...) tablealias
