I have a printer that wants to print from tray 3(the bottom tray) by default. I was wondering if anyone knows how I can change the default tray location for the printer. So when I print using the following command:

lp -d printername test.txt

I want it to print from tray 2, instead of tray 3.

what can I do?

Read the printer's documentation.

Hope This Helps, PH.

wow, that was a great answer. My printer didn't come with "documentation" for SCO on how to set the default tray.

"lp -o upper" will print from the tray that I want, but it has to be forced to go there. I want it to go there by default.

In the interface script, add to the initialisation string the escape sequence corresponding to the -o upper option.
If you don't know where the interface script resides, please post the name and version of OS (OSR, UnixWare, Linux ?) and the name of the printer. You may also consider post the brand and model of the printer.
BTW, just a final note: please read carefully either one FAQ in my signature.

And if you don't have the printer documentation either search the net for it ( or the manufacturers site.

If you still can't find it, ask the manufacturer for it. You may need to pay them for this info.

If they don't supply it then fell free to ask us as some of us have some printer documentation and we MAY be able to help depending on the printer make/model.

and look at the FAQ's very, very carefully.

Now as you have it working with the -o option you may be lucky, as you will have the string available already. Let's just hope you manage to use it well.
