I ran into this problem today and was beating my head against the wall(for about 5 minutes).
When I opened the document with word I got a message "An input converter has to be installed". After it is installed there is a dialogue window with title "File Conversion" "select the encoding that makes your document readable". It has three selection boxes on top "windows default" "MSDOS" "other encoding" next to it has a scrolable list of encoding, but none of them work, it was just a bunch of garbled text.
I opened MS Word and went FILE>OPEN and then selected "RECOVER TEXT FROM ANY FILE" and then selected the file I needed. It still had some gabled txt but I could read and understand some of it.
From this I got a major clue because on the file it showed a list like this "SHEET 1" "SHEET 2" "SHEET 3", Sound familiar? Thats also at the bottom of EXCEL spreadsheets. I changed the extension to .xls and tada! I had my file.
This may not work for you, but it wont hurt to give it a try.
