SELECT records where a string is a certain length? 1

Can someone help a fool with SQL? I need to select records from a VARCHAR field that are of a length of 3 characters (alphabetical & numeric). The field includes strings that range from 1 to 5 characters.

How 'bout:

SELECT * from <tablename>
WHERE length(<columnname>) = 3
