Select non-shared database in DBA app

All,

We have a DBA module that currently takes its database settings from an ini file. We are looking for a way of allowing users to select the database the DBA is connected to. This will function in a tools>options manner.
The main problem we envisage will be selecting a database that is on a machine/server but within a folder that is not shared.
I.e. we are looking for a way of querying a server(Firebird) to see what databases are available from that machine.

Any suggestions/help/direction would be geatly appreciated.
