Has anyone ever run into this annoyance where clicking a select box to expand the list just causes it to drop down quickly then just as quickly revert back to the original value without allowing you to select an item from the list?

This seems to alternate between being an issue with the size of the window and/or elements in a different table that are hidden/shown.

Any suggestions on what to look at? Am I missing something simple?

Thanks!

I suggest you look at the code. And if you want us to help you, I suggest you show us the code. Or did you expect us to just know this one off the bat?

Hopefully I can get a chance to post the code later today.

I thought that this may be a bug or nuance in IE, or behavior that someone had experienced previously.

This weird select box behavior occurs when the version of IE you are running includes the hotfix that requires the user to click/activate a control before using it (can't recall exactly what hotfix# that is).

So, when this happens, usually in some obscure place on the form, there is a small tooltip that reads 'hit spacebar or enter to activate and use this control'. Once you obey the tooltip, the select boxes should behave properly.

Hmm, I know this hotfix has been causing issues, but i was only aware that it was with a flash based applets and things.

This could be some form of conflict with some CSS layout your using or somthing like that.

As vragabond pointed out above its alot easier to diagnose the issue if we can have a peek at the code, of atleast see the site in the flesh.

I'm sure its nothing massive.

Well, no, originally the hotfix disabled flash applets and the like. As for all other controls on web pages, you have to click to activate them.

A good example of this hotfix being a major hassle is the Yahoo radio ratings stars. To rate anything, you have to click twice in each set of stars for each song that plays. Once to activate, then once to rate. So, rating each song (artist/song/album) takes 6 clicks.

Thanks for the offer, but I've done tons of reading previously to see if there was a workaround for this control activation situation besides uninstalling the hotfix, and there really isn't. And that's definitely where the problem lies. The select boxes seem to dislike it when you don't pay attention to some controls on the form first.
