We run Exchange 5.5 on a Windows 2000 Server. Over the last 6 months or so I have noticed a pretty steady increase in our e-mail spam to the point where it needs to be addressed. I am looking for suggestions on the best way to fight spam. Do you guys use some sort of spam filter that is installed on top of Exchange? Or do you do something else? Any info I can get is much appeciated.

Scott

I use a packet filtering spam filter solution called XWALL along with EAST Informer Exchange 5.5 server running on win2K. It has been a great experience and comes at a relatively good price. You can visit their website at for more info.

I use MailMarshal from NetIQ. It runs on a separate box. You can create rules to specify spam/language/etc. You can also incorporate blacklists and virus scanning. We implemented this about 2 years ago and have gone from over 6,000/day of spam to about 1,200. I keep tweaking it so it only gets better. It also allows you to quarantine e-mails and release them only when you have made sure they are ok to be released. It's a great product. I highly recommend it!

Xwall is so light on system resources yet so effective on spam control, it catches 95% of my spam, 1% false positives, and oh so easy to set up.

Xwall v3.33, best product, 'nuff said.

GFi Mail Essentials. Been using it for years. They claim 98% but I'm getting more than that. They claim 1% false positive but I'm getting less than that.

I have to give another recommendation for xwall. Simple and lightweight, yet it does almost more than the "expensive yearly fee, upgrade will cost you x more" companies out there.

Xwall, running for 2 years, catches 99% of my spam, .8% false positives, and easy to set up. Less than 1/2 hr per month for maintenance.

I agree, Xwall v3.33 is the best.

Cheers.

We use Ciphertrust's Ironmail firewall. It's a hardware box, reasonably priced and an excellent tool.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.
