Everyone has their likes and dislikes when it comes to firewalls (software or hardware). You will probably get a plethora of answers to your question. None of which will be wrong. I picked McAfee as my firewall and Internet security solution. Then I chose Symantec as my virus solution. Along with Sybot and a couple of others to help check for trojans and the like. Again this is just my preferences. And remember, if someone wants into your PC bad enough you would be hard pressed to stop them. Here is a link you could check out which has an independent rating of firewall products. Good Luck!!
If you have an extra old computer laying around. You can install IPCop on it. It is a linux distribution with a nice web front end. I have used it for over a year and only had to reboot once becuase I couldn't figure out why my internet wasn't working.
If you are running a business with critical customer data, you should absolutely go with a hardware firewall solution. Software firewalls are nice, but can too easily be shutdown/disabled or be exploited by other software.
Zonealarm in particular has been the target of recent worms that kill its process.
Hardware firewalls are much more expensive than software, but you should be able to get a basic firewall + router for around $100. Netgear routers are fairly standard and work pretty well. Linksys is the other major low-end firewall producer.
Here's a couple of products that I have used and like. I'm sure others here can give similar recommendations.
