Is this at all possible? We need to connect a couple of '98 boxes to a 2000 machine because there is network software that needs to be used by two other users.

I have been told that when you try to connect through network neighbourhood you can enter the administrator user name and password and you should get access to the machines files.

This is not the case. I have checked that the C: drive is shared. Also some of the win2K machines can only see printers and not the C: drive when you connect over the network

Any ideas?

Yes its possible to do. I have setup networks with W2k
machines where the shares can be accessed also by W98 boxes.
I can't remember the precise details now but...
1) Remember that network neighbourhood updates take a l-o-o-o-o-ng time with Microsoft networking. Be patient before giving up on a particular setting.
2) The Win2k security is much stronger than W98. The user of
the W98 machine has to be known to the W2k machine. Setup up
a user on the win2k machine with the name and password that
the w98 user uses to logon to the w98 machine.
3) When it finally works, don't forget to set the password
expiry length suitably.
Hope this helps.
