Hi all,
When I see Login names in the form: S<gibberish numbers> are those logins that have been deleted? What exactly does that meaan, and can they be removed from things like security policies, rights assignments, etc?
--Jim

This is the SID - the security ID - user names are merely aliases to the SID. Kinda like how is really an alias to 216.45.19.33

When you delete an account, it is possible that only the SID information remains so yes, you could be seeing deleted account information. Or, it could be taking the system a few seconds (or longer) to map to the corresponding user name. This is seen often when you look up quota information.

hwcomputing,
Thank you, that helps. Do you know if there's a table or cross-reference where I could look at the alias and the SID side-by-side and see if this phantom SID I see here and there is one that can be safely removed from my file-permissions dialogs?
Thanks,
--Jim
