I'm trying to get to grips with access security. I've tried both manually creating a new workgroup and then editing the users/groups and doing it with the wizard. When I open the secured database (which prompts for my user name and password) I can amend the user and group accounts and details. However if I open the workgroup file it shows only The default user of admin (and admin is a member of the admins group). Should the user/group details be held in the database or in the workgroup file?

Thew workgroup file holds groups and users (and user passwords). The database simply holds permissions for each object.
When you start Access you are being authenticated against the workgroup file before any database is open. If you get past that point, the database opens and you acquire the permissions in accordance with your login.

If you are not asked for a username and pasword, you are being logged in automatically as user Admin and in the database you acquire the permissions assigned to that user and the groups Admin belongs to.
