I currently run a Windows 2000 network. I used to have a Novell 4.1 server running also. I recently put the Novell server into retirement and I am running solely a Windows 2000 network. Prior to getting rid of the Novell server I did a backup(Veritas Backup Exec 8.6) of the files I needed from the Novell server and restored them to one of my Windows 2000 servers. I would say 80% of the files restored properly. The remaining 20% had restored with messed up permissions (not allowing anyone, accept the last person to use the file to get in). I really didn't think to much of it, and actually thought the % would be higher going from Novell to Windows when it came to some anticipated problems. I reset the permissions on the
troubled files and walked away. The trouble is once a user was done with the file and saved it, the permissions would
revert to only allowing that person to open the file (to the extent of changing ownership too). This was discovered when another user needed the same file. I have gone to the extent of recreating (copy and paste) the file, renaming the file, and applying the appropriate permissions, but I am still plagued with this problem. Up to this point I have logged on to the Win2K server as an Enterprise admin, taken ownership of all of the affected files when everyone else is offline and applied EVERYONE - FULL CONTROL to the files to recreate the dynamic permissions change. At first glance it seemed to work, but now I am seeing the same symptoms slowly happening all over again. There have been no new changes beyond routine critical updates to the server. I am not inclined to believe an update has caused this because none of the other servers are displaying these issues. I have looked on Microsoft's site and Veritas to no avail. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
