Security Update for MS .NET Framework afftects CR XI Server/Enterprise

The Windows XP Family Security Update for .NET Framework , Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) adversely affects CR Server XI and BOBJ Enterprise (if you're using the .NET tools). Please refer to the following Business Objects KB article to resolve the issues (404 Resource not found):

When attempting to access InfoView from the BusinessObjects Enterprise XI launchpad, the following error message appears:

"Server Error in '/businesobjects/Enterprise11/WebTools' Application.
The resource cannot be found.
Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly."

Why does this error message appear, and how can you resolve it?

Solution

This error message appears after installing the security update for the Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (Microsoft KB886903). This error message appears if the URL that is specified in the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase contains a trailing backslash (\).

Also, the KB article is slightly incorrect:

This is not true, I received the error message in XP Professional.

The fix (removing the backslash from the virtual directory entry) is simple to do and works well.
