I want to start and stop the FTP server on my NW6.5 server on a schedule. I have been manually opening and closing port 21 on our router to permit access by our remote locations. What is the potential problems with leaving the port open all the time with the FTP server only running at predefined times? Also, do some routers allow scheduling of port status so the port could be controlled on a schedule?

you can secure the server so that it only allows ftp from specific locations etc

if you really want it stopped then just cron a nwftpd unload and then an ftpstart later

I've looked at modifying the ftprest file. I only want a specific set of users to access the FTP server. The syntax of the file leads me to think the logic is 'let everyone in but limit the users, addresses, etc named here.' Ideas?
