I have put a copy of my secured database on a network drive across the WAN. When I try and run it from another location it is painfully slow despite the fact that there are v little details in any of the tables as yet.

I tried putting a copy of the unsecured version in the same location and it seems quicker.

Does security slow down access and what can I do to speed it up?

Sounds like your MDW is on the networked location too. This WILL slow things down because when a user tries to do something in your db, the instance of Access on their PC talks to the MDW (network traffic) to see if they have the right privileges to do it, the MDW talks back to the instance of Access to say 'ok' (more network traffic), then the instance of Access talks to the networked database to say 'do it' (more traffic) and finally the networked db talks back to the Access client to say 'done' (even more traffic). At least that's my understanding of how it goes. It would certainly explain the slowness anyway!

yes it is split into FE/BE and yes the mdw file is also on the network. Most of the users are on the same server as the database but for those who aren't (which includes me the developer) it is v slow.

should i move the mdw file and if so where to?
