I don't know if anyone else has ever come across this issue, but here goes nothing.
IE6 in WinXP SP1 - somehow, something that I am unaware of has managed to get onto the system and do something cunning. I'm not sure how, but something has rewritten, or locally forced, or something, the DNS entries for all the major Anti-virus and security sites.
For example: On this connection, go to amd.com, whatever, no problem. Try to connect to mcafee.com, symantec.com, grisoft.com, problem. Investigation using the beauty of the 'ping' command revealed that while any other site you try is getting a correct DNS response, any of the security/AV sites are being rerouted to 127.0.0.1 (localhost).
Anyone any ideas? Other than the 'virus scna' plan, which has been tried.
