Security settings wont change

Hi everybody! I helping a friend here who has a very weird problem. The system runs on Windows XP and uses IE 6.0. I have the following problem. I go to the windows update site and I get the message "Your current securit setting prohibits running activex controls..." I know I should change this under Internet Options --> Security then the ActiveX part to get rid of the message. Now comes the problem: i go under custom level and reset it to low, ... easy. I exit the options menu by pressing apply and then ok, I open the options again an it is set to medium again. I tried everything but it is always set to medium again, impossible to change, I tried everything!! Any ideas. Thanks

Thanks for your help, but when I install IE 6 Service Pack 1 I get the following error: "The software you are installing has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows XP" Probably a different problem, any idea why?

Click continue and ignore the message. It should go on installing.

Hi guys, thanks for your help. But it doesn't solve the problem. Clicking ok when the errors occur finishes the installation and restarts the pc as it probably should. But when I log on again, a message comes up saying the installation wasn't finished and askes me if I want to go on with the installation or restart it. In both cases it gives the same errors, "installs" IE 6 and reboots, and it all starts over again ... do you want to go on with the installation ...
