I want to setup a couple of directories on my W2003 server so that only certain users can view the pages, but I don't want anyone to get a prompt for username and password.

(Just Accounting can access)
(Just Sales can access)
(Everyone can access)

I was thinking that all I have to do is setup

C:\inetpub\ to remove anonymous and add Accounting

C:\inetpub\ to remove anonymous and add sales

C:\inetpub\ to leave as is.

Will this make it so a Sales person does not get bothered for a password on any area unless he goes to the accounting area? And will he just get an Access Denied message?

Yes, you are correct. However, I believe that a Sales person trying to access the Accounting site will actually get prompted for their creds. Assuming that it is an Intranet site.

Also, one thing to note. If you put a "." in an url, then by default IE won't pass Windows Creds to the site automatically. A login prompt will open (challenges the password). So, if you are going to be accessing a site using the fully qualified domain name (i.e. then make sure to add " to the Trusted Zone in IE.

You can also do this in Firefox in the about:config section.

Just thought I would mention that.
