I have multiple databases saved onto one hard drive, and I'v applied security to one, by setting up a workgroup file, but it seems to be applying to all my other databases as well. When I change the workgroup in the other databases, it then applies to all the databases again. Is there anyway to assign one workgroup to one database, but not to another?

John

Yes, by not using the global system.mdw

Hope This Helps, PH.

I'm not using the global system.mdw Instead, I created another .mdw file. And I joined that group through the workgroup administrator. Yet, when I open any database, I have to go through that workgroup. Why is that?

Don't use a global mdw file (ie avoid the workgroup administrator).
For each secured database create a desktop shortcut with the relevant command line switches (ie /wrkgrp)

PHV, how can you stop users from finding the FE and opening it without using the shortcut (which tells it which workgrp to join) with this method?

Sorry, figured it out. You have to add a pw to the 'Admin' account, because that is the account you log in under if you don't specify a workgroup.

Spoke too soon. If you distribute a FE to many users with thier own machines, and they try to login to the FE without using a link that specifies a workgroup, won't it default to thier system.mdw where the admin account doesn't need a pw?

In the database, remove all permissions from the admin account and the users group, including the ability to open the database. Create a group ("myusers" or something like that) in the custom workgroup file, and make sure all valid users are added to this group. Allow this group to open the database.

Note: Before implementing any type of security, back up your database and your mdw files. Until you are familiar with Access security, it is possible to lock yourself out if you make a mistake. Always have backups.
