I set up groups and user accounts and it works fine on my computer but when I copied the database over to the server..and everyone runs a shortcut to that database...I'm the only one that ever gets the username/password prompt...how can I make it so everyone gets the prompt? (also when other people run it over the network I looked in the sercurity stuff and nothing is set at all how I set it..its all default..)

I'm using Access97

Thanks

How was the short cut set up. To use a short cut to the database, that short cut should have made a reference to the .mdw file with set your security. The default .mdw file is the systems.mdw located in the systems32 folder of the operating system folder you are using. The proper .mdw file setup is the first and last step of setting up workgroup security and a corresponding short cut icon. I have a short paper created by my IS Department that does the workgroup security in 16 "easy" steps.

Here is what I did. I created the database on my computer..then I created a MDE file from that..then I copied it to the server and went to every computer and put a shortcut on their desktops that pointed to the MDE file.(I made the shortcut by right clicking and creating a shortcut.)

When I run the shortcut on my computer the Access password prompt comes up...but it doesn't do it on the other computers.

I'm not sure what your talking about systems.mdw I dont know what that is..our network is already set up...I dont deal with that at all, I'm just trying to make the access database have certain things locked.

It sounds like you modified your system's .mdw file. You should have created a new .mdw file before creating the workgroups. That way the users would have had to attach to that .mdw file and the workgroup security would have been in force. Send me an email at comtaxdog@yahoo.com and Ill send you the steps referenced.

I sent you an email...I'm confused about mdw..I dont know what that file is or does or how I made it or anything.

System.mdw is the default security file. Whatever you do to set up security with this file can be circumvented by using any other copy of the default file. You need to create a new mdw file (and then some).

Don't do anything else until you've read enough to get the picture--you can shoot yourself in the foot if you don't understand the security model. Go to the MS Knowledge Base and search Access Security topics. Jeff Roberts
