Security issue

I need to stop users using either the colon or backslash characters in the 'open' or 'save as' filename field in office applications to prevent users browsing the network.

Anyone any ideas?

This is not a possibility to my knowledge. This type of security needs to be handled on the network side. If you don't want users browsing a certain area, do give them rights to that area.
