Hello all,

Right now I'm busy setting up a fresh installation of Cognos 8, before we migrate from Series 7.3.
But I have some questions concerning how the security works in Cognos 8.

We have some PowerCubes which are secured using the LDAP which came with version 7. For 8 we want to get rid of this LDAP directory and use our MS Active Directory which contains all the users and roles etc. etc...

However, how does a cube with build in series 7 security work with cognos 8 security? Removing the series 7 security is no option, since the 2 versions have to co-exist for the time being...

Maybe it's better to keep using the Series 7 security because it's flexible with new user accounts?

I'm completely lost at the moment, so any help is appreciated!

How about using the best of 2 worlds?
Use series 7 for your cubes, and activate Access Manager "External User linking" against your AD, to get the users from there.
Then point Cognos 8 against that S7 which is linked to AD.

Eli,

The approach I recommend is to have both envs. for now. Keep your series 7 LDAP and do the Cognos 8 Installation and create an AD version of the authentication for the Cognos 8 software. You'll have to recreate the cubes with the new security.

I recommend that because in case something goes wrong -- A high percentage of time, you can always fall back to your proven and current version. Having said that, you also have to consider the vision and risk your management wants to take. They could have a different opinion on how to approach this.

There are various ways to skin a cat, it just depends on how you want to skin it and how long you want to take to do a good job. There are always pluses and minuses in both (AD and Series 7) authentication. Overall, you want to be 100% convinced that whatever you do, your customer will be happy you followed their request and have a way to get back in case you need to.
