We are currently using GP 9.0 and I try to use advanced security as often as possible. But it seems I cannot always grant all of the access required to modify specific forms in GP so I am required to go into Tools>System>Security.

When I launch this option it says “Security and advanced security are both installed. You should use only the security setup window or only the advanced security widow to change user security settings. Would you like to open advanced security. “

When using advanced security simply checking the boxes does not give my users the rights required to update the fields in the forms. I am required to go into the old security windows and modify individual user id’s to give them the appropriate access. Does anyone else have this issue? Am I doing this incorrectly?

Hi

You have raised a few issues that I will try to address.

1) The warning dialog when opening standard security.

This dialog is a reminder that Advanced Security is being used and that it is not recommended to use Standard Security. While you can use Standard Security, it will be slower as it runs additional trigger code to maintain the Advanced Security Accelerator (Cache) table. Some actions in Standard Security require that sections of the Accelerator table be dropped so they can be re-read next time Advanced Security is opened.

As both Standard Security and Advanced Security hit the same final security tables, it will still work fine. The bottom line is that using Standard Security after Advanced Security has been used has the potential to make both Standard and Advanced Security slower until the Accelerator is synchronised again.

The only activity that you still need to use a standard window for is creating, deleting or edit a User Class. The security settings for a class should be changed with Advanced Security. Everything else is possible in Advanced Security.

2) Accessing customisations

With Advanced Security, once you have found the form or report resource using either By Menu or By Dictionary view, click on the plus sign to expand it and this will show a list of the available versions from the various dictionaries (Original, Modified, Alternate, Modified Alternate).

3) By Alternate, Custom & Modified view

Normally, customisations are shown under the original form or report and you need to know they are there to open the form or report and select the customisation.

If you use the By Alternate, Custom & Modified View, Advanced Security will only display forms and reports that have customisations. It will also show the customisation under the product that created the customisation as well as under the original.

This view is specifically designed to allow the simple setting of access to customisations.
