Hi,

When our website is searched for organically in Google, the url that appears (and which the user is directed to) is HTTPS, looking like a secure site!

Our secure certificate is for so it's okay except, of course, for IE6's beautiful secure/non-secure warning...

I've checked in sitemap.xml that has been submitted to Google and all is normal - http://

Has anyone else experienced this? Or can you think of any reasons why this would occur?

Cheers in advance,

Hi Chris,

I searched on health-on-line, as we appear top for that, further down the page there's another of our pages...without a secure url...I'll check some more.

We have two button links on the homepage going into our secure app process, could this be the issue?

Thanks for your help,

Rob

Hi again Chris,

It seems that Google is seeing HTTPS pages - whereas MSN & Yahoo are not - also when comparing the url on a Google page with others around it, ours is the only one that has the format: - all the other pages are simply www.

Thanks if you can suggest anything.

somewhere along the way the crawler has indexed your site with the https: protocol, it isn't difficult as the whole site does respond with pages.
The reason probably is because your site does link to the https: version several times on every page.
So because your site places more importance to those page (to an algo at least), Googles algo has decided that the https: site is the one to show for queries.
just a bit of experience and educated guesswork BTW

what you need to do is to ensure that crawlers never get into the https site.

Your site runs asp I notice, so it's a relatively simple task to have some UA and port detection then redirect SE bots back to the HTTP version.

Chris.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Hi,

Thanks for your help, Chris, your theory makes perfect sense...this site is throwing up a lot of stuff I've never seen before - but at least I can add it to my experience now!

I'll look into your suggestions - you don't have any FAQ links by chance, do you?

Cheers again,

Rob

Thanks Chris,

I've registered at searchbliss and HR - I know I'll have some questions at some point!

The updated script is working excellently now - thanks again...

Cheers,

The script I was referring to is the custom 404, btw :)

re: HTTPs issue: Am just cutting all links back into the main site from our "new window" secure app process. Any pages required - callback, privacy pages, etc - are being moved into the secure area. Hopefully that might fix this up.

Hi all,

Just to let you know a resolution to the HTTPS issue:

1. I closed all routes to non-secure internal URLs from the secure pages.
2. Then I set up the if...end if code looking for HTTPS and directing to HTTP.

These two steps combined - I don't know if one was more useful than the other - have solved this issue and our homepage now appears in Google's organic listings without the HTTPS.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
