Secure login via the URL 1

I'm writing a script to check to see if a website with a secure login is up or not. The usual URL for a secure login is

https://USERNAME:PASS@www.website.com.

My question is what if the Username is something like john@company.com? Then the URL will be

https://john@company.com:password@www.website.com.

With 2 '@' symbol in there, it doesn't know where to parse it to get the username/pass and the rest of the website name. Does any1 know how to get around this?

Use % then the asc() equivalent of the character when using punctuaution in a URL like:

https://johndcompany.com:password@www.mysite.com

Also look up the URLencode() and HTMLencode functions.
